Gambling has always been a topic of interest in the movies. Therefore, numerous Hollywood blockbusters tell amazing adventures related to gambling. After all, some best movies of all times such as The Hangover (2009) take place in Las Vegas. However, not all gambling movies focus on the fun side of this exciting activity. Some retell bizarre stories, while others reveal dark secrets. In any case, there are some titles that anyone interested in gambling must watch. So, here are the top-5 movies for gambling.

Owning Mahowny (2003)

This Canadian film comes with an incredible cast including Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Minnie Driver. Owning Mahowny tells a true story of a bank employee from Toronto who managed to embezzle over $10 million. Why did he do it, some people may wonder. Well, to feed his unhealthy gambling habit. The plot takes place in 1982 in Toronto and focuses on the protagonist Dan Mahowny. As he embezzles more and more money, he makes frequent trips to Atlantic City and lives a fabulous life. However, everything crumbles when the police start investigating his friend Frank, which leads to the discovery of Mahowny’s criminal acts. Owning Mahowny established itself as a top movie for gambling, but it also received lots of positive reviews in general.

Mississippi Grind (2015)

Mississippi Grind is an American drama starring Ryan Reynolds, Ben Mendelsohn and Sienna Miller. This is one of the newer movies for gambling and certainly deserves mention. The plot of the film revolves around a gambler Gerry, who has financial issues. One night, Gerry meets another gambler Curtis and they soon become friends. Their friendship leads them to all kinds of gambling-related incidents, including a trip to New Orleans. By the end of their most unfortunate adventure, Gerry and Curtis finally manage to score a massive win. Even though the action includes prostitutes, violence and disappointment, Mississippi Grind still remains a must-see title.

Hard Eight (1996)

Hard Eight is yet another movie about an unlikely friendship between two gamblers. With a star-studded cast (Phillip Baker Hall, Hohn C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow), the movie had real potential. However, it turned out a real flop in the box office, making only $222k on a budget of $3 million. Nonetheless, this American neo-noir thriller comes with a great plot and acting. It follows the story of Sydney, an experienced gambler, who helps a man named John to make money with gambling. After two years, John is a successful gambler and Sydney’s protégé. However, a series of incidents lead to a romantic love story, kidnapping and murder. So, anyone who loves dark thrillers set in Las Vegas should spare 104 minutes for Hard Eight.

rounders-759x500Rounders (1998)

Starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton, Rounders reveals the world of underground high roller poker. The film earned almost double its budget and often founds itself in lists of top movies for gambling. Even though Rounders wasn’t too popular at the beginning, it became an iconic movie with the rise of poker. The plotline of Rounders centers around two friends who try to pay off a massive debt. Their strategy is to try and win at high roller tables by becoming “rounders”. Namely, this term describes a person who goes from one city to another in pursuit of high-stake card games. Naturally, being “rounders” leads them to all kinds of adventures and suspicious personas. In any case, the movie has a hopeful ending. One of the protagonists manages to settle all debts and heads for Las Vegas to become a professional poker player.

Casino (1995)

The last but not the least on our top-5 movies for gambling list is Martin Scorsese’s Casino. With a cast including Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, it’s not surprising that this is a cult movie. Most characters and events in the film relate to real-life people. The story revolves around Sam “Ace” Rothstein, who is a gambling handicapper invited to manage a Las Vegas casino. Naturally, the real catch is the fact that the mafia uses the casino to skim its profits. Quickly all hell breaks loose as everyone tries to steal their share and the FBI starts investigating the casino. After two dramatic hours, most Las Vegas casinos end up in the hands of big corporations. On the other hand, most mafia members end up dead or in prison. The only exception is Sam, who goes back to his roots and becomes a sports handicapper.
